Not many people know that Ashington  has a small population of endangered Red Squirrels.

The British Red Squirrel is in decline primarily due to the introduction of Grey Squirrels from North America from the 1870’s onwards.

Although a small number of Grey Squirrels have been seen in and around Bothal   

woods, Red Squirrels can still be found in the woodland at the west end of the town, adjacent to the Ashington to Pegswood road.
