Ashingtons red squirrels can be found in a small strip of woodland approximately three quarters of a mile long at the West end of the town on the A197 Ashington to Pegswood road.
They are generally difficult to spot amongst the dense foliage, however with a little practice and patience, they can be heard by listening for the distinctive sound of cracking
branches and watching for the dropping of food residue (bits of nuts etc), beneath whichever tree they are in.
The best times to look for the squirrels are early in the morning until about 10:30 to 11:00, and then from about 4:00 PM until sunset. However there are the odd occasions when they are active all day.
If you first don’t succeed in seeing them, keep trying it is well worth the wait.
